How to Lose Weight - A Step-by-Step Guide

If you have been trying to lose weight but it simply won't come off, don't reach for the jack hammer just yet!  Diet Bites is here to show you how to lose weight, step-by-step.

Although Diet Bites is a fun place, losing weight isn't much fun at all. It's true.  Have you ever heard anyone say, "Goody! I'm going on a diet!  I am so happy!  I am so excited!  I can't wait to begin starving!  I love hunger pains!  I can't wait to dine on rice cakes and water!  I am going to love having dieter's breath of dinosaur!  I just love smelling like a T-Rex.
And constipation rocks!  So does all the gas that I'm going to get once I begin eating all those lovely and healthy green veggies!"  See?  About the only 'fun thing' is when you begin to lose weight.  When that happens, it's like riding a puffy cloud on a clear day.  I would LOVE for you to ride that puffy cloud! Furthermore, I'd really LOVE to see you reach your weight goal.
If I could, I'd sit on your shoulder every moment of the day, guiding you along the rocky old Diet Trail.  But since that's not very logical, perhaps I can help by telling you how to lose weight, step-by-step.  And these aren't giant steps! These are all baby steps, but baby steps will take you all the way to the very end of your Diet Trail. So, what must you do to lose weight?
1. SETTING YOUR GOAL:  Go to my Standard Weight Charts and calculate the amount of weight that you need to lose.  Don't worry - they are free!  
This is how I would like you to calculate your 'overall goal weight'.  As an example, if you are a woman and you are 5'4" tall, please set your goal at 151 pounds.  Even if you have a very teensy frame, set your goal for 151 pounds.
2. SETTING YOUR CALORIES:  This step has now been made super easy for you!  Diet Bites has a free planner (yes, it's totally free) that provides you with a pattern for meal planning.  The planner contains a few weeks worth of meals - so check that out as it may be very useful for your diet.  The first planner is located here:  Free Diet Bites Planner.
Simply purchase the listed ingredients and eat what is outlined in our planner and yes, you will lose weight.  The recipes can be prepared from foods that you probably have in your kitchen right now!  There aren't any fancy ingredients or specialty items to purchase.  In addition, continue to learn all that you can about the calorie content of the food you eat. Set a limit of 1,200 - 1,500 calories per day and don't go over that amount.
3. SETTING YOUR EATING TIMES:  You will lose weight faster if you eat breakfast.  Breakfast jump-starts your metabolism and gets your body burning fat. Even a small bowl of oatmeal is sufficient.

Make lunch your biggest meal of the day.
Watch your beverages as these calories can really add up.
Limit yourself to a couple of snacks per day.


4. NUTRITION:  While dieting, please take a multi-vitamin.  This not only aids nutrition, it helps your body process food and aids digestion.  Add calcium to your diet in the form of supplements OR 3 cups of skim milk per day.  Studies show that calcium enhances weight loss, and individuals that consumed 3 glasses of skim milk per day lost more weight than those individuals who did not.Eat a light dinner and eat it as early as possible.
5. EXERCISE:  You don't have run 40 miles per day to lose weight.

If we continue to favor agri-industry over agriculture, what will be the future of food? What will be the future of our planet?

The Prince’s Speech: On the Future of Food, Prince Charles’ inspiring message now in book form, challenges conventional wisdom about industrial agriculture and calls on all of us to take action to build a sustainable food system. The book will only take you about 30 minutes to read, but will leave you feeling empowered to protect the planet

The Problem

The Prince delves into deep issues such as why farmers who use the agricultural techniques responsible for the problems (like using chemicals and pesticides, feeding un-sick animals antibiotics, favoring large crop yields over healthy ones, the list goes on…) make more money than those who “do the right thing,” farming organically, locally, and naturally. Similarly, consumers who wants to buy food sourced in these healthy ways are penalized by having to pay higher prices.

Prince Charles, one of the few public figures to ever speak out on the under-discussed topic, says that if we don’t fix our agricultural system, we’ll end up with serious health and economic issues in the future.

The Solution

He says that the problems we’ve created can be reversed and that future generations can benefit from healthier food, healthier land, and a healthier Mother Nature.

So what can you do to help the cause?

Shop locally by buying produce from a farmer’s market and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Buy organic whenever possible. As the Prince says in his speech, you may pay more for it now, but the long-term cost to the environment is much less!

You can also encourage your local grocery store or fave restaurant to buy local and/or organic products. Join a Community Supported Agriculture group in your area and you’ll receive “shares” of seasonal farm products from a local farmer.

We’ve big fans of healthy fats.  We recently talked a lot about the health benefits of canola oil, have talked about healthy omega-3 and touched on coconut oil and saturated fat in the past.

But with all the talk of fat, comes a question that I got just last night while giving a talk …

… can you eat TOO much healthy fat?

Great question.  And how do you define "too much?"

All fats are certainly not created equal.  That’s an undisputed fact.  Sometimes, though, when people hear x is good, they go overboard and think more is better.  For example, while olive oil is fantastic for you … drizzling it on top of every food you eat is not.  I’ve seen this done, though.

Fat, regardless of the type, still has calories.  In fact, it weighs in at over double that of carbohydrates or protein, providing 9 calories/gram (carbs and protein both provide 4 calories/gram).  While carbs are often demonized and people think solely cutting carbs is the answer to their weight loss needs.  They’re wrong.

You can’t simply add olive oil to all your foods, include avocado, nuts, salmon, whole eggs and other sources of healthy fat with reckless abandon.  Again, fat contains calories.  And while we don’t believe all calories are created equally … that doesn’t mean they’re unimportant.  At the end of the day total calories still matter.  If you’re eating more than you’re burning through exercise and just general "living" you will not lose fat.  This doesn’t mean we’re advocating a low fat diet.  It’s the right types of fat and the right quantities.

Mohr Results Bottom Line: We suggest aiming for around 25-35% of calories from healthy fats.  Again, the sources of this fat are key — wild salmon, fish oil, egg yolks, olive and canola oils, avocado, nuts and nut butters are all great sources.

Just remember these are all very easy to over eat and we often suggest measuring the amount of oil used.  It’s tough to estimate the amount of oil when poured into a pan — just when you think you’re adding 1 TBS, you suddenly have 2 or 3.  And, at the end of the day, you still need to keep a handle on total calories.

To lose 1 pound, you need an expenditure of approximately 3,500 calories. You can achieve this either by cutting back on your food intake, by increasing physical activity, or ideally, by doing both.

For example, if you consume 500 extra calories per day for one week without changing your activity level, you will gain 1 pound in weight (seven days multiplied by 500 calories equals 3,500 calories, or the number of calories resulting in a 1-pound weight gain). Likewise, if you eat 500 fewer calories each day for a week or burn 500 calories per day through exercise for one week, you will lose 1 pound.

Examples of calorie content of some popular foods and beverages include the following:

Any activities you do throughout the day are added to your BMR (basal metabolic rate) to determine the total number of calories you burn each day. For example, a 170-pound person who spends 45 minutes walking briskly will burn about 300 calories. The same time spent on housecleaning burns about 200 calories, and mowing the lawn for 45 minutes consumes around 275 calories. How fast should you expect to lose weight?

Most experts agree that a safe, healthy rate of weight loss is one to 1 ½ pounds per week. Modification of eating habits along with regular exercise is the most effective way to lose weight over the long term. It is also the ideal way to ensure that the weight stays off.

Starvation diets may result in rapid weight loss, but this weight loss is almost impossible to maintain for most people. When food intake is severely restricted (below approximately 1,200 calories per day), the body begins to adapt to this state of poor nutrition by reducing its metabolic rate, potentially making it even more difficult to lose weight. It is also possible to experience hunger pangs, bouts of hypoglycemia, headaches, and mood changes from overly stringent dieting. These symptoms can result in binge eating and weight gain. Since a highly restrictive diet is almost impossible to maintain for a long time, people who attempt to starve themselves thin often start to gain weight again when they stop dieting.
